 Medical Conditions

There are some medical conditions that are contra-indicated for some treatments. This means that a therapist may need to obtain permission from your GP, consultant or other medical practitioner before carrying out treatment, or may avoid certain areas of the body during treatment. Conditions that may be contraindicated include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Cancer
  • Varicose Veins and Ulcers
  • Phlebitis
  • Contagious or infectious skin diseases
  • Disorders of the circulatory and lymphatic system
  • Recent operations and / or scar tissue
  • Areas of inflammation and / or bruising
  • Skin problems such as rashes, bruises, sores, lesions, swelling, burns, boils and blisters
  • Thrombosis

Advising your Therapist:

You will be asked at your initial consultation for details of any current or recent medical conditions and medication. Please be honest and advise the therapist if your medical status changes between subsequent appointments. Permission from your GP/ practitioner can be provided in any format.

If you are unsure whether you need permission from your GP, consultant or medical practitioner please speak to the therapist or receptionist when making an appointment or enquiry. This will avoid the potential disappointment of turning up for an appointment to be told you cannot have treatment.

Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that you can have treatment and that any conditions are declared, so if you arrive for a treatment and need permission, you will still be charged for the treatment because that time could have been used by another client. Our Day Spa takes no responsibility if you fail to declare a medical condition and the treatment you receive affects or is affected by that condition.

Skin Tests

Skin tests are required or recommended for some of our treatments including:

  • spray tanning
  • eyelash / eyebrow tinting

If you are not sure whether or not you require a skin test please ask. Skin tests need to be carried out 24 hours prior to treatment.

About your Treatment

Preparation for a Treatment:

The best way to prepare for a treatment is:

  • ensure that the areas to be treated are clean
  • obtain permission from your GP or medical practitioner if you have any medical conditions that are contraindicated for the treatment
  • speak to the therapist beforehand if you have any questions or concerns
  • think about what you will be doing before and after the treatment. For example:
  • if you are coming for a deeply relaxing therapy you may wish to ensure that you do not have anything too exciting or requiring detailed thinking planned afterwards
  • if you are having a manicure or pedicure avoid anything that will mess with your nail polish afterwards
  • if you are having an Indian head massage don’t plan anything that will require a neat hairstyle afterwards

Precautions following a Treatment:

Many people find that after a deeply relaxing therapy they want to rest and may take some time to “come round”. This is perfectly normal, but you may find that you need to take extra care when driving or working with anything mechanical following such a treatment.

Following a manicure or pedicure you will need to take precautions to protect your nail polish until it is fully dried.

Following a massage of any type you may find that you experience headaches and other symptoms where the body is detoxifying. You may also find that your body aches and may be bruised where deep tissue massage has applied. This should pass in a day or two.

Following a massage of any type you should:

  • drink plenty of water to assist with detoxification
  • take care when driving or operating machinery
  • avoid alcohol and other stimulants (caffeine, drugs, etc) for at least twelve hours following treatment
  • avoid eating a large meal for at least two hours following treatment
  • avoid extremes of temperature
  • avoid any work requiring detailed attention.

Healing Crisis:

It is not unusual to experience what we call a “healing crisis” during a treatment. This is because treatments work at a number of levels within the individual, allow thinking time and space for memories and other experiences to come to the surface to be dealt with. You may find you become tearful during or after the treatment. This is perfectly normal and your therapist will continue to work unless you ask to stop the treatment.
